His Advocacies

Make this government work: cheaper and cleaner electricity is the way to go

  • Ramon Mitra wants us to benefit from natural resources available in the country that can provide cheap electricity and clean energy and will provide Filipinos the good life that we all deserve.
  • It is an advantage that Ramon Mitra, as director of the Philippine National Oil Company (PNOC), has solid experiences and understands the complexities of the oil and power industry. He has first-hand knowledge of the government’s moves to solve the huge problems on how to provide cheap electricity to our nation.
  • Mitra believes the great promise of renewable energy and that the key is not only in having access to clean energy, but also to be involved in the global efforts of mitigating the effects of global warming and climate change. The people must be warned and educated on this. Climate change is an urgent problem that should be addressed now.
  • Having held various capacities in the PNOC, Ramon Mitra learned of the potentials of Jatropha. Mitra is confident that if we can expand our Jatropha plantations and process these in addition to bio-ethanol, we can lessen our imported oil dependency by at least 10%. A simple and logical legislation giving tax-free incentives to local oil and power producers will get this done.
  • Ramon Mitra knows that it’s about time that the Philippine government fully support the advances in these cleaner and cheaper sources of energy.
  • Ramon Mitra believes that the way to go is to ensure this government works for the welfare of the individual Filipino. He believes the government must invest in our gas and oil exploration processes. Filipinos must explore his own resources. The Filipino will benefit more if he owns the process of exploring his own natural wealth.

Secure Agriculture as a long-term solution to achieve food security

  • Ramon, like his father, Monching Mitra, believes that “the most honorable way to make a living is through farming”. He considers himself a farmer with a deep understanding of the crucial role of farmers and fisher-folk in our society.
  • With Ramon Mitra in the Senate, our farmers and fisher-folk will have a kindred spirit who strongly believes they should not be among the poorest sectors in the country.
  • Among his strongest advocacies is to make agricultural modernization program work for our farmers, and immediately.
  • Mitra believes that the farmers need to be empowered, not just to help them feed themselves but also feed the entire country.
  • Mitra believes there is a need to overhaul the farmers’ credit program- the re-thinking of a truly effective agrarian reform program (which Monching Mitra’s Speakership helped put into law) in order to achieve “food security.”
  • Mitra knows the key is empowering our farmers and modernizing our farms. This can be done by putting in place agricultural modernization projects that works not only on paper but in reality, right here, right now.
  • Mitra believes prioritizing our farmers and fisher folks will provide three meals a day for every Filipino and will lead to finally winning the fight against poverty.

Every Filipino should sleep like a hero at night

  • As a soldier, Ramon Mitra acquired the experience, which gave him the lesson that changed his life forever- that peace is a right, not a privilege.
  • The Distinguished Conduct Star, the second highest award for gallantry that Ramon Mitra received not only gave him the respect of his peers and his family but has also given him a deep understanding that the peace process can also be pursued in the bargaining table.
  • Mitra is a firm believer of peaceful negotiations based on mutual respect of religious and ideological beliefs. As a Senator he will serve guided by these beliefs – that the way to end any kind of conflict is to respect the rights of every individual regardless of religious and cultural differences.
  • From his military experience, Mitra will carry on the fight to bring lasting peace, but this time not through a legislative process because he believes every Filipino deserves a peaceful sleep every night and peaceful mornings thereafter.

Every Filipino should sleep like a hero at night

  • Ramon Mitra knows that first you make every Filipino believe that there is hope for the Philippines.
  • Then we make all Filipinos believe that there is equal opportunity for all and we can achieve change and progress because our leaders will walk the talk and get down to serious business of getting things done.
  • In Mitra’s book is a simple formula – less talk, more action.
